International Rural Women’s Day | Recognizing Rural Women, Strengthening Democracy

On the occasion of International Rural Women’s Day, Aurat Foundation Balochistan reaffirmed its commitment to recognizing rural women’s invaluable contributions and advocating for their rights, empowerment, and meaningful participation in democratic processes.

Ms. Yasmeen Mughal, Project Coordinator, Aurat Foundation Balochistan, participated in a commemorative event organized at the Office of the Provincial Election Commission Balochistan in Quetta. During the event, she introduced Aurat Foundation and highlighted its longstanding efforts to promote women’s rights, gender equality, social justice, and women’s empowerment.

She emphasized that rural women play a vital role in agriculture, livestock management, household economies, food security, and community development. Despite their significant contributions, they continue to face multiple challenges, including limited access to quality education, healthcare, clean drinking water, decent employment, financial resources, and economic opportunities. Social and institutional barriers also restrict their participation in public decision-making and democratic processes.

Ms. Mughal stressed that rural women’s empowerment must go beyond recognition and translate into concrete policy measures and practical action. She called for coordinated efforts by the Government of Balochistan, the Election Commission of Pakistan, NADRA, civil society organizations, and other relevant stakeholders to facilitate women’s CNIC issuance and voter registration, remove barriers to electoral participation, and ensure women’s equal opportunities in political representation and decision-making.

Aurat Foundation calls for:
▪️ Accessible education, healthcare, clean drinking water, and essential public services for rural women.
▪️ Economic empowerment through skills development, decent employment, financial inclusion, and livelihood opportunities.
▪️ Special voter registration and civic awareness campaigns in rural and underserved areas.
▪️ Equal opportunities for women to participate in elections, political leadership, local governance and public decision-making.
▪️ Stronger implementation of gender-responsive policies and effective coordination among government institutions and civil society.

Empowering rural women is not merely a matter of equality; it is essential for inclusive development, stronger democratic institutions, and a more just and prosperous Balochistan.

Let us recognize rural women’s contributions, protect their rights and ensure that every woman has the opportunity, voice, and freedom to shape her future.
